Abstract: The article deals with the theme of the relationship between society and state in the thought of Vladimir Solov’ëv, reconstructing the history of ideas and, therefore, of events in their essential plot, of Europe and compares with it the particular and unique position of Russia with respect to European modernity. The question arises, dear to Slavophiles, whether modernity, as it is given in Europe and the West, is the only possible way to it or whether there is a Russian way to modernity. On the other hand, Solov’ev’s study can be useful to us Westerners, given that the roots of Russian civilization lie in the common ground of ancient and Byzantine Greece, from which our European civilization also comes.
